Help installing tar.gz programs on ubuntu?

Okay, I am seriously retarded when it comes to installing stuff on ubuntu. I'm just trying it out, but I'm struggling with how to intall these files. It would be much appreciated if anyone could describe how to do it in the most simplest way, even by telling me where everything is. Thanks :)
