Why Is he doing this?

My puggle is in the process of being house broken. He seems to have very little trouble going potty outside, but lately he has been avoiding me when he knows he needs to go. Instead he finds somewhere out of site and quiet in the house to relieve himself. We have decided to utilize the crate method of house breaking. Is he doing this in defiance or is he just not getting the concept?
